And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini is one of those books which moves me. There is a lyrical quality about the prose which I love, and the story is epic. Some years ago I read The Kite Runner written by this author and was very impressed and I will certainly be reading the third of his books, A Thousand Splendid Suns. What a treat! I highly recommend this book.
Khaled Hosseinis third novel And the Mountains Echoed begins in the early 1950s in Shadbagh, Afghanistan in the home of brother and sister, Abdullah and Pari, who are extremely close. As the direct consequence of a heartbreaking decision made by their father, Saboor, their lives are irrevocably altered. Hosseini has a remarkable ability for expressing the body and its frailty, vulnerability and capacity for both tenderness and violence. His cross generational and geographical style adds to the already overwhelming nature of his stories, namely the long reaching ramifications of the decisions and actions made in the past on family members in the future. This story is bittersweet and at times difficult to read, but the themes of loyalty, friendship, unrequited love, longing and loss make it very memorable.
Yet another epic tale from Khaled Hosseini who always manages to paint such a beautiful picture of the landscape and humble lives led by his characters. This book will have you enraptured as you are catapulted from tragedy to happiness in mere pages. As always the characters are portrayed in vibrant colour and depth and speak to all ages as we remember the bonds with our family from being a child to an adult.
