From Blue Collar to Billionaire ...Hunter Valley mine electrician Nathan Tinkler borrowed big in 2005, made a fortune from several speculative coal plays, and by 2011 was a self-made billionaire. He had gambled and won, but his volatility and reluctance to pay his debts were making him enemies. He lived the high life as only a young man would, buying luxury homes, private jets, sports cars and football teams, and splurging massively to build a horseracing empire. But Tinkler's dreams had extended beyond even his resources, and his business model worked only in a rising market. When coal prices slumped in 2012, Tinkler had no cash flow to service his massive borrowings and no allies to help him recover. Within months he was trying desperately to stave off his creditors, large and small, and fighting to save his businesses and his fortune. In this impressive new biography, leading business writer Paddy Manning tells the story of Tinkler's meteoric rise to wealth, and captures the drama of his equally rapid downfall.

Manning's account of the rise and fall of Nathan Tinkler left me with more answers than questions. Even to the authors own concession, many questions are unanswered and there are gaps in this story. The book does provide an interesting insight into the life of a mining mogul however it left me wondering how different is Tinkler to any other mining billionaire? At least Tinkler gave back to the community, unlike others who are in a position to do so. Unfortunately Manning doesn't elaborate on this aspect of the Tinkler story.

I feel Manning missed his target of delivering a fair, balanced and objective account of the rise and fall of Nathan Tinkler. It was difficult to get an idea of the real Nathan Tinkler given there are so many conflicting stories/opinions and the biography is lacking comment from the man himself how do you reconcile comments such as he was a smart, happy-go-lucky gregarious.. had great personal drive, good sense of humour guts.. passionate, wears his arse on his sleeve with single-minded, non-communicative.. couldnt demonstrate understanding arrogant had nothing but contempt for the average wage earner The book is a waste of money just google Nathan Tinkler if you want to find out all about the medias opinion of the guy.

A light hearted read, but difficult to establish fiction from fact given it is only one side of the story even to the authors own concession, many questions are unanswered and there are gaps in this story. How different is Tinkler to any other mining mogul? I would suggest not much. at least he gave back to the community.
