Synopsis
On 31 October 2011 James Castrission and Justin Jones set out to achieve 'one of the last great polar adventures' an unsupported return journey from the edge of the Antarctic continent to the South Pole. This is a quest that has been attempted by many experienced polar explorers before them ... and all have failed. This book will detail everything: the preparation, the setbacks, the outset, the highs and the lows in brutally honest detail. This expedition is the modern-day equivalent of the exploits of Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton. They are man-hauling a pulk with 200kg of provisions each. Why they are doing this? Through realising a childhood dream and committing themselves to a groundbreaking expedition, they wish to inspire others to overcome fear and pursue their own adventures and dreams.

Extreme South

Two best mates, Two modern day heroes. This book will make you laugh, cry, and evoke a sense of what they went through to make their dream a reality. Not your average biography of a hard trip, but told in a way that helps you understand the environment, what it takes to complete it and the history behind the last explored land mass on earth.

indubitable honest
30/08/2012
If you want to read a book that makes you think and feel, read Extreme South. The emotion drips from every page. It made me cry, it made me laugh and it made me consider. You dont have to imagine, the words take you there, and sometimes to places you wouldnt want to be. Through it all, the friendship that exists between Cas and Jonsey and the developing friendship with Aleks is all inspiring and leaves you with a taste of what is right with this world.- Like Be the first to like this review

Extreme Reading
30/08/2012
The title Extreme South is an understatement. Read this book and go on an incredible journey, all without leaving the comfort of an arm chair (and you will need to be comfortable as you will not want to put the book down). James and Justin (Cas and Jonsey) undertake another expedition of epic & historical proportions equivalent to the great Polar journeys of Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton. But wait dont run from reading history, with generous accessibility, the style of the book allows you to immerse in this remarkable and often unthinkable journey with gripping gusto. Written in the same style of Crossing The Ditch but with more maturity, this book is not just a daily journal. With well-crafted words Cas drives you through the highs and lows of every aspect of the improbable trip but with intelligent internal dialogue, he also raises some interesting and important questions on what drives someone to complete such a journey and provides some understanding why they succeeded where others have failed. Go on, take the emotional ride, pick this book up and you wont put it down.- Like Be the first to like this review

Amazing story of heart and mind
14/08/2012
I followed this expedition closely as it happened and thought I knew the story. However, when I started the book, I couldn't put it down! It really is more a story of the hearts and minds of these two amazing people and how that changed over 3 months of constant and extreme adversity on all fronts. The already enormous respect that I had for these two guys was made ten-fold after reading this book. Simply a fantastic and inspiring read!- Like Be the first to like this review

Tense, Suspenseful, Inspiring
13/08/2012
What made this book so captivating was that even with Cas and Jonesys' meticulous risk planning, the horrors of trying to survive Antarctica unsupported unfold on each page as the Aussies face both physical and mental breakdown. I read this book in three days, and the final half in one sitting! The race to the finish (and to just survive) is incredibly suspenseful making this book a fantastic read and somewhat terrifying ride! More please.- Like Be the first to like this review

Wow. This is the second book of James Castrission that I have read and I could not put it down! I will definitely be purchasing another copy for my dad for Fathers Day! In an age where many believe the age of adventure has passed these two remarkable young Aussies show that anything is possible. Thoroughly researched and beautifully written. All I can say is READ IT, you won't be disappointed!- Like Be the first to like this review
