Synopsis

I hit rock-bottom the summer I met Miss Lottie. I was 16, and she was 84. But she was my first real friend. My name is Alayna, and I live for stories with happy endings-probably because my own life story was far from happy in the beginning. Dumped on the steps of a foster agency as a baby, bounced in and out of jail and from one foster home to another, and fighting off anybody who tried to get close...well, that's just for starters. When the court ordered me to help out at the Warrenton Alzheimer's Nursing Home, I had no choice. Either that, or go to the jail with the real bars on the windows four miles down the road. That's how I met Miss Lottie, an old lady who sometimes forgot my name but knew me better than anyone else ever had. Little did I know that she-and her hunky, track-star grandson, Josh-would open the door to the prison I'd built around myself. Or that I'd find the smile on my face I'd always been looking for. A budding romance. A stunning revelation. A dramatic journey through anger and delinquency to hope and faith in the face of adversity.
