Sally Green

Sally Green lives in north-west England with her husband and son. She has had various jobs and even a profession but in 2010 she discovered a love of writing and now just can't stop.

She used to keep chickens, makes decent jam, doesn't mind ironing, loves to walk in Wales even when it's raining, and will probably never jog again. She really ought to drink less coffee. Half Bad is her first novel.

3.5 stars. This was a very unique read. A wonderfully new way of telling a tale about witches, Half Bad centralises around the theme of good vs. evil. A boy, born a half black witch is scrutinised in his society of pure white witches.

This book could be split into two parts. The first being his painful childhood and the second, the journey he takes to find Mercury, a witch who can help him.

I thought the first part was an excellent portrayal of discrimination that can be likened to the real world. It was painful and dark and had me on the edge of my seat although it took some time to get used to the writing style.

The second part- the adventure was more fast paced although I felt that so many things happened in the storyline but by the end the story didn't actually go anywhere. I was a bit disappointed by the anticlimatic ending but for a debut novel, this was something very different and special.

Overall I did enjoy the book and would recommend it to people who want to explore the YA genre and experience something different.
