Sue Monk Kidds new book is a touching novel about sisters Sarah and Nina Grimke, who were actual early supporters for abolitionism and womens rights in the early nineteenth century, and their slaves, primarily Hetty and her mother Charlotte. Hetty and Sarah form a strained alliance when Sarah refuses to accept her as a gift for her eleventh birthday. A decision her parents do not accept. Head strong and determined to do something meaningful with her life, Sarah decides in adulthood that she can no longer abide slavery and embarks upon campaigning with her sister Nina. Like other books about slavery, the most difficult thing to digest is the justifications or lack thereof of slave owners for their brutality. The Invention of Wings is a story full of cruelty and loss, but it is also about great courage and love and it is a book not easily forgotten.
