Now a major motion picture starring Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. With a new postscript by the author and a stunning colour picture section.

'I experienced that sinking feeling you get when you know you have conned yourself into doing something difficult and there's no going back.'

So begins Robyn Davidson's perilous journey across 1,700 miles of hostile Australian desert to the sea with only four camels and a dog for company.

Enduring sweltering heat, fending off poisonous snakes and lecherous men, chasing her camels when they get skittish and nursing them when they are injured, Davidson emerges as an extraordinarily courageous heroine driven by a love of Australia's landscape, an empathy for its indigenous people, and a willingness to cast away the trappings of her former identity.

Tracks is the compelling, candid story of her odyssey of discovery and transformation.

Robyn Davidson

Robyn Davidson was born on a cattle property in Queensland. She moved to Sydney in the late Sixties, then returned to study in Brisbane before going to Alice Springs to prepare for her journey across the Australian desert.

Davidson’s first book Tracks, her account of this crossing, was an international sensation, and was adapted for a film starring Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. She has travelled extensively, and has lived in London, New York and India. In the early 1990s Davidson migrated with and wrote about nomads in north-west India. She is now based in regional Victoria, but spends some time each year in India.

What makes one women compelled to walk 1,700 miles?

"Tracks" is Robyn Davidson's story of her journey from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, crossing the desert accompanied by camels and her dog, Diggity. This autobiography about her travels is a very inspiring read, she shows such courage and determination. Davidson's writing is humorous, honest and at times vulnerable. There were occasions where I had to stop and re-read paragraphs for the poetic sense they made in her reflections of the journey. Then there is the beautiful imagery of the Australian desert.

I found this book to be incredibly engaging. A story of independence and learning that will inspire and stay with you long after you've put the book down.

A 1,700 mile trek through the Australian desert in 1977. Four camels, one dog and an amazing woman called Robyn Davidson. An emotive and beautiful memoir which is still as relevant and as powerful as it was over 25 years ago.

Tracks is the memoir of Robyn Davidson, who in 1977 trekked from Alice Springs to the West Coast with her four camels, Dookie, Zeleika, Bubby and Goliath and her dog, Diggity. It is a compelling story, from her arrival in the Northern Territory to her initial dealings with camels and the people who are involved with introducing her to their care, to the eventual beginning of her journey across Australia and the journey itself. Her love of camels and the Australian desert and her respect for the Indigenous is palpable, and her introspection, both on a personal and a political level, is absorbing.
