Christmas is looming, and investigator Catherine Berlin is out of a job. Broke, and with a drug habit that's only just under control, she quickly agrees when an old friend offers her work. It's a simple investigation with a generous fee, looking into the dealings of a small-time entrepreneur. The only catch? It's in Russia. But when Berlin arrives in Moscow, things are not so straightforward. Shadowy figures stalk her through the frozen streets. She's kicked out of her hotel, her all-important medication confiscated by police. Strung out and alone, Berlin turns to her interpreter, an eccentric Brit named Charlie. But Charlie's past is as murky as Berlin's own, and when the subject of the investigation disappears, Berlin realises Charlie may be part of the web. The only way out is to hunt down the truth, even if it kills her.

What I’m reading right now...
is a classic biography of Queen Elizabeth I by J. E. Neale, Forensic ScienceA Very Short Introduction by Jim Fraser and Umbrella by Will Self.

My favourite book growing up was...
The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. It took me to other worlds – the Land of Topsy Turvy and the Land of Do-as-you-please. I became addicted to reading. My mum would complain that I always ‘had my head in a book’. No better place for heads.

My all time favourite book is...
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. What larks, Pip!

The book I would recommend everyone to read is...
To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee. Superb writing, great story, compelling characters. Heartbreaking.

The book I wish I wrote is...
To Kill A Mocking Bird.

My guilty reading pleasure is...
the form guide.

The book on my bookshelf that I have never read is...
Ulysses by James Joyce.

The book that never should have been turned into a film is...
Harry Potter.

My book is...
about exile, betrayal, addiction and murder, with some funny bits.

I’ll never forget...
the scent of persimmons in  Moscow. It was minus fifteen, I was a stranger in a hostile city blanketed in snow. The perfume and colour of the fruit was like a warm smile.

My favourite place is...
the British Library in London. Actually, I like any library, anywhere. There should be more of them, better funded. Watching local libraries close in England is very depressing.

The most dangerous thing I have ever done is...
write a novel.

The first time I..
went to Moscow I hated it. I found the city threatening and impenetrable and the people surly. I learnt you just have to look a little closer.

I regret...
not doing my year as a pupil barrister after I was Called to the Bar in England. The lure of other bars was too strong.

I remember...
where I was when Kennedy was assassinated -  in London, eating dinner with my family. We had a black and white television with a tiny screen and there was a news flash. All the adults put down their knives and forks. I think that’s where my interest in politics and conspiracies began.

The one piece of advice I should have listened to but didn’t is...
‘don’t take sweets from strangers’ .

I love...
Moscow.

I hate...
people who are judgemental.

I wish...
I could travel business class. I was upgraded once on a flight from Melbourne to London and it ruined me for economy. Ignorance was bliss.

I can’t say no to...
good Scotch. Actually, any Scotch.

Yesterday, I...
started an investigation into misconduct in a public sector organisation, wrote three hundred words of my next book, went to the pub, ate fish and chips and watched Orphan Black.
