What a life Anjelica Huston has had! This is part one of her autobiography, and covers her childhood in Ireland in the 50s, through her 60s London teens, to her New York modelling career and ending with the start of her Hollywood career in the 70s. Each moment is told beautifully and vividly, like someone thinking back to their childhood and recollecting scenes from it, a someone who has a way with words and good observational skills, and it is packed with famous names and anecdotes.
Told not so much as a chronological series of events (though there is some chronology) but more as a series of moments described in detail and pieced together (like filmed vignettes of her life, if you like), you may find it frustrating if you want to know what happened after what. Equally, the vast cast of actors, authors, artists, and other famed people, blended with the everyday people, can become a bit confusing, especially if someone features in one anecdote but never again. There are certainly some stories where a name is mentioned and I wasnt sure if it was the local butcher or someone more famous but to be honest, it doesnt really matter.
As Anjelica gets older, more is remembered, and more detail (which makes sense) which means the end of the book really takes off, becoming more cohesive and directed. The second part of her story is due to be published in 2014, which starts in Los Angeles 1973. Looking forward to it!
