The real, untold, and unvarnished story of life inside the Playboy Mansion-and the man who holds the key-from the woman who was Hef's #1 girlfriend and star of The Girls Next Door

The shocking, never-before-told story of the bizarre world inside the legendary Playboy Mansion-and, finally, the secret truth about the man who holds the key-from one of the few people who truly knows: Hef"s former #1 girlfriend and star of The Girls Next Door.

A spontaneous decision at age twenty-one transformed small-town Oregon girl Holly Sue Cullen into Holly Madison, Hugh Hefner"s #1 girlfriend. But like Alice"s journey into Wonderland, after Holly plunged down the rabbit hole, what seemed like a fairytale life inside the Playboy Mansion-including A-list celebrity parties and her own #1-rated television show for four years-quickly devolved into an oppressive routine of strict rules, manipulation, and battles with ambitious, backstabbing bunnies. Life inside the notorious Mansion wasn"t a dream at all-and quickly became her nightmare. After losing her identity, her sense of self-worth, and her hope for the future, Holly found herself sitting alone in a bathtub contemplating suicide.

But instead of ending her life, Holly chose to take charge of it.

In this shockingly candid and surprisingly moving memoir, this thoughtful and introspective woman opens up about life inside the Mansion, the drugs, the sex, the abuse, the infamous parties, and her real behind-the-scenes life with Bridget, Kendra, and, of course, Mr. Playboy himself.

With great courage, Holly shares the details of her subsequent troubled relationship, landing her own successful television series, and the hard work of healing, including her turn on Dancing with the Stars. A cautionary tale and a celebration of personal empowerment, Down the Rabbit Hole reminds us of the importance of fighting for our dreams-and finding the life we deserve.

Holly Maddison is not who she seemed to be when she was in the spotlight, as Hef’s number one girlfriend. She begins by telling us that we ‘got’ her on the show, right? She wasn’t really enthralled by the whole experience, and we picked up on her clues, yeah?

To be honest, and it’s trawling way back in my memory for the few short episodes I watched of “The Girls Next Door”, this was not the impression I gained from viewing Holly and Hef.

Indeed, for a lot of this book it seems like she’s trying to rewrite history. I can’t say that I hold a lot of sympathy for her cries of “but I was going to be homeless if I didn’t move in!” – Holly had tried to be on the Playboy radar for years before she made it to the Mansion, she attempted to be the Millennium Playmate in her home town, for example, so it wasn’t that far out of the question to believe that she would hunt down opportunities to be there whenever the chance came up.

And I am sure that many others who are faced with her dilemma of not having a place to stay would choose friends couches, or seeking help from family before choosing life in the Mansion.

There are elements of her story that ring true – I can imagine the world of the Playmates being catty and obnoxious, but it seems that there’s a bit missing from her tale – if she was so far down on the pecking order, doesn’t it seem a bit convenient that she ended up as Number One, without throwing a few jabs out herself?

Call it the reality tv sheen, but she came across as a little more cunning and less ‘deer in the headlights’ than what she’s trying to sell us in this book.

The tales of woe between herself and Hef are truly dismal to read. You can’t help but cringe a little at the thought of such an old man throwing such huge tantrums when he didn’t get his way. But I still maintain that she had a choice to live there, and to move out, so using that as an excuse to stay doesn’t fly with me.

There’s many allusions to tidbits that never really eventuate, and if you’ve read the press surrounding the launch of this book, then you won’t have to read it – what was spread over 300+ pages can be told in a promo article for the book.
