Moving to the outback to join the Flying Doctors will change Billie's life forever. After her teenage daughter Mia falls in with the wrong crowd, Dr Billie Green decides it's time to leave the city and return home to far western NSW. When an opportunity to pursue her childhood dream of joining the Flying Doctor Service comes along, she jumps at the chance. Flight nurse Daphne Prince - who is thrilled to have another woman join the otherwise male crew - and their handsome new boss, Morgan Blake, instantly make her feel welcome. Just out of town, drought-stricken grazier Soretta Byrnes has been struggling to make ends meet and has opened her homestead to boarders. Tempted by its faded splendour and beautiful outback setting, Billie, Mia and Daphne decide to move in and the four of them are soon joined by eccentric eighty-year-old Lorna Lamerton. The unlikely housemates are cautious at first, but soon they are offering each other frank advice and staunch support as they tackle medical emergencies, romantic adventures and the challenges of growing up and getting older. But when one of their lives is threatened, the strong friendship they have forged will face the ultimate test . . . A heartwarming story of friendship, courage and compassion in the outback from internationally bestselling author Fiona McArthur.

What I’m reading right now… I’m immersed in Ilona Andrews - Kate Daniels Series and I still can’t believe I am. Not into blood, beasts or vampires (though I did watch all of Buffy and Angel series). I haven’t read futuristic for years but I just LOVE Kate, the heroine. I would walk across hot coals for the next book.

My favourite book growing up… Modesty Blaise Series. She was kick-ass and confident. Didn’t expect anyone else to fix her problems – she’d fix them herself, thank you. Now I know why I love Kate. She reminds me of Modesty.

My all time favourite book is… The Impossible Virgin – Modesty Blaise Series – written by Peter O’Donnell. You know, I couldn’t believe they threw Willie out of that plane tied to a chair. Funny how I had no problem believing he survived, though.

The book I would recommend everyone to read… Magic Bites. Ilona Andrews – why should I be the only one hanging out for another book? Just don’t listen to it in the car though because you can’t screen out the blood while you’re driving.

The book I wish I wrote… Harry Potter – seriously what a legend.

My guilty reading pleasure is… listening to audiobooks while I drive. Sometimes I don’t want to get to my destination.

The book on my bookshelf that I have never read… The Grapes Of Wrath – just the title puts me off.

The book that never should have been turned into a film… Fifty Shades of Gray – much better in your own imagination and you control the safety word.

My book is… an emotional journey, a celebration of understated bravery and hope. And some Aussie humour.

I’ll never forget… the first time I touched Uluru and the rock seemed to hum under my fingers. I did not expect that.

My favourite place is… Hat Head, 20 minutes from home – It has a mountain, shaped like a pregnant woman, when you look at it from the beach.

The most dangerous thing I have ever done is… jump out of a plane.

The first time I… went up in an ultra-light aircraft while overseas. I almost panicked as we took off. Seriously my heart was jumping out of that bicycle with wings and heading back to the hanger.

I regret… forgetting I can’t change the way other people think and fighting that losing battle.

I remember… seeing my husband the first time. The thought still makes me smile and fancy him.

The one piece of advice I should have listened to but didn’t was… ‘Don’t say it!’ I shouldn’t have said it. ☺

I love… birthing women.

I hate… mean people.

I wish… I could fly. Sometimes I dream I can.

I can’t say no to… snowballs – the marshmallow kind.

Yesterday, I… swam in the sea and then came home to watch the sunset over the paddocks. How lucky am I!

The Homestead Girls is the latest rural offering from Fiona McArthur and set in the fictitious town of Mica Ridge, two hours from Broken Hill. It is a tale of friendship, compassion and overcoming the baggage of the past while illustrating the intense and important work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Fiona McArthur is a rural midwife and her medical knowledge is well explored.

Dr Billie Green lived in Mica Ridge as a child but moved to the city with an aunt after the loss of her parents. She is a doctor who has spent many years travelling, never really putting down roots, in a bid to expand her knowledge base. She also has a teenage daughter falling in with the wrong crowd so when the opportunity to return to her hometown and take up a position with the Royal Flying Doctor Service arises she knows it's time. Mia is less than impressed with the idea of small town life but soon makes friends.

The Homestead Girls are made up of Soretta Byrnes the granddaughter of drought-stricken sheep station owner Lachlan; Daphne Prince the RFDS flight nurse; Loretta Lamerton the octogenarian who spent 50 years nursing the outback and newly arrived Billie and Mia Green. The five women are brought together by the RFDS and through time spent together and circumstance end up unlikely housemates.

All of these women found a new strength when they came together, a new perspective and formed an unexpected bond. They quickly became the family they had all been missing.

There is a minor element of romance which wasn't explored in depth but was enough to bring some of our male characters into sharper focus. They too have their fair share of baggage so it is with great interest I watched the interactions between the staff at the RFDS base.
