Living in different worlds, Sam and Emily find each other through a song. One song, one moment, that forges a powerful connection between them and changes their lives forever.

Due to their psychotic father's criminal activities, Sam and his younger brother Riddle have lived life on the run for as long as they can remember. Forced to fend for themselves, all they've ever had was each other. Cut off from society, Sam find solace in music.

Emily, born to a loving family has so far had a trouble free and uncomplicated life. Interested in people and their stories, Emily has a knack for getting others to open up to her.

When Sam and Emily meet, everything changes. Emily has never known a boy like Sam, who is nothing like the cocky guys at school. Sam, no longer invisible starts to experience life to the fullest, and dreads the time when his father will next uproot their family.

I'll Be There has an almost poetic, fable feel to it. Sloan's sentences are short and to the point, but don't come across as jerky or abrupt. Instead the language is beautiful and powerful, with heartfelt descriptions that pull you into the narrative.

It took me a few chapters to really get into this novel, which was in part due to the writing style. "I'll Be There" is written in third person omniscient, frequently switching between characters. It left me feeling like I was watching from a distance, only seeing snippets of the story. Sloan has cleverly weaved these fractured moments into a coherent story, however, combined with the limited dialogue, made it hard to fully connect with the characters.

I would have liked to have seen more of the relationship between Emily and Sam. Instead of the reader being privy to the development of their relationship, it is mostly eluded to. Dialogue between the couple is scarce and many of their conversations are conveyed through third person descriptions of what they said. We are told they fall in love, but we aren't around to see it. Unfortunately, it made Emily's heartbreak a little hard to believe.

Once you get into the novel, it is well worth it. Despite the disconnection with the characters, I found myself invested in the story. A beautiful story of hope, destiny, and how the little things can change everything.
