The stakes are high for the smart and spirited vets charged with caring for Australia's rural livestock, wildlife and beloved family pets.

Those who call the outback home often depend on animals for their wellbeing - and, in many cases, their livelihood.

In far south-west Queensland, Rachel Wilson and Will Nason vet all the horses at the famous Birdsville Races; in the Victorian High Country, Dave Hall's own life-threatening car accident fired his ambition to make a difference; and in her mixed practice in north-west New South Wales, lone vet Mary-Jane Stutsel has had seven days off-call in twenty years.

Among others, we also meet Jan Allen, who works with camp dogs in remote Indigenous communities in the Top End, and adventurous Rick Fenny in the vast Pilbara, who cared for the region's beloved nomad kelpie, Red Dog. Outback Vets is a walk on Australia's wild side, from the glistening coast to the dusty desert.

Get to know these hard-working animal lovers as they ride, drive and fly across some of the most remote regions of Australia, rescuing and treating creatures great and small.

What I’m reading right now… Re-reading Hello from the Gillespie’s by Monica McInerney. I read it when it came out last year and it was so entertaining I’m reading it again.

My favourite book growing up (why?)… Lord of the Rings by JR Tolkien… so much adventure, drama and intrigue and in the end, of course, good prevails…

My all time favourite book is (why?)… I have several but probably Pieces of Blue by Kerry McGinnis… a beautifully written memoir of her life growing up droving with her father and siblings in outback Australia.

The book I would recommend everyone to read (why?)… A Sketchy English Grammar by Patricia Ford. It seems no one is taught grammar anymore and yet, a well-constructed sentence says so much more than one that is not.

My guilty reading pleasure is… I never feel guilty reading…

The book on my bookshelf that I have never read… I’ve never been able to get into any of Bryce Courtney’s novels. Loved his non-fiction, April Fool’s Day, though…

The book that never should have been turned into a film… The Hobbit. Lord of the Rings was fabulous but the production of The Hobbit is just an opportunistic tale incorporating characters from Lord of the Rings who were never in the original book.

My book... Outback Vets, shares the stories of some of the very clever vets who live and work in remote areas Australia, and the animals they care for. They often work outside in extreme climatic conditions a long way from their clinics. They don’t have the luxury of specialists up the road to refer to. They’re it. If they can’t fix it, it can’t be fixed… they’re fascinating…

I’ll never forget… seeing and getting to know each of our babies for the first time. Seeing my first published story in print. The day Penguin rang me...

My favourite place is… my writing/sewing hut.

The most dangerous thing I have ever done is… I’ve never done anything too dangerous though I’ve occasionally challenged myself.

The first time I… got on a plane in Brisbane to fly overseas, I got off in Cairns.

I love… Apart from writing? Getting together with family and friends, positive people, rock and roll, making wedding dresses and Lindt Mint chocolate…

I hate… hearing sportsmen and celebrities called heroes… one hopes they might be good role models but they’re not heroes. Emergency service workers are heroes…

I can’t say no to… Lindt Mint Chocolate.

Yesterday, I… read Vets for the last time before it goes to the printer.
