I am at one with Nature's perfection – her beauty, her colours, her fragrances – and she has allowed me to glimpse it in a man.'

On the eve of the First World War, Fleurette, the only daughter of the wealthy Delacroix perfume dynasty, is being forced to marry a man she loathes, Aimery De Lasset, head of the pre-eminent perfume manufacturer in France. It is only the cathedral bells tolling the rally to the frontlines that save her from sharing his bed.

When she receives an unexpected letter from Aimery's estranged brother, Fleurette is left holding a terrible secret, and the sparks of a powerful passion. Her discoveries risk shattering the two families and their perfume empires, bringing tragedy down on them all.

The Perfumer's Secret is an intoxicating feast for the senses, a highly passionate and dramatic story of duty, deception and desire from the beloved, bestselling author Fiona McIntosh.

The Perfumer’s Secret isn’t my first choice of books to read for one reason only: I don’t read romance novels. But when I had it in my hands, I couldn’t resist the temptation of finding out what the Perfumer’s Secret was. Could it be scandalous, for the era that it was written in? Yes. Yes it can but not at all what I was thinking. It was an eye opener and a shocker. And right from the beginning your mind is churning and spitting out assumptions left, right and centre – at least mine was. But you find out what the secret is soon enough and from then on a whole new lot of questions pop into your head and hope for the main character, Fleurette, whom you grow to love on many fronts.

It is a very sweetly endearing romance novel, one to please the heart of any romantic. The characters are flawless – in the fact that you can’t compare yourself to them, you can’t predict their reactions because you weren’t from that time, you wouldn’t know what was proper or expected of you. It was a real turning point in our history when the women of this world became homebound heroes by stepping into the shoes of the man and keeping the houses, communities and businesses running in the only way they could and they did a fanastic job of it, as you can see through Fleurette’s actions. She is a hero unto herself and a person to admire for her efforts in obtaining her dream and her patience.

The romantic side of the story was a bit quick for me. There was no real build up and you can see it coming. But that’s the beauty in Romance novels. You want the ending to be a happy one, a perfect one, a “storybook” relatable one. I do understand that, but that’s also why I steer away from Romance novels. Because I like the build up – the mystery of whether or not the characters I come to love, fall in love with one another. But aside from the romance, the book is laced with the horrors and heartbreak of war. Through Fleurette, you can see how it personally affected her and changed her, brought her into herself and made her into the person she became. It is a story that would be easily remembered also for its unique touch of the history of perfume and how it is made – which I found very interesting. It’s amazing what techniques and time had to be put into the production of such beautiful things.

All in all, it was a good book to read and those that love Romance novels would definitely love this one.
