Lucy Foley’s debut novel, ‘The Book of Lost and Found’ was a good read. It jumps back and forth through different time periods and effectively tells two stories. Kate is the central character, who, heartbroken after her mother’s death, traces down her biological grandparents and is told the story of their love and loss. While uncovering secrets, Kate herself begins to heal and learns to love again. I thought ‘The Book of Lost and Found’ was well-written. I found the start a little confusing, but once you get your head around all the characters, the story really begins to take hold. My favourite part was the middle of the book, when Kate is in Corsica. By the time I read Alice’s part of the story it felt slightly repetitive but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and can’t wait for more from Lucy Foley.

This story is about love, loss, family and so much more. Kate has lost her family and, at the same time, found a mystery that will lead her on a journey through the past. She is given a painting that steers her to a famous artist. It is with him that Kate begins to hear the story behind the painting but, more importantly, about the woman and what she means to Kate. The artist, Thomas, recounts his tale and how it was Alice, the woman in the painting, who ultimately encouraged him to pursue his dreams of being an artist.

There is a connection between Thomas and Alice but not strong enough to keep them from going their separate ways. Things have changed when the two of them are eventually reunited. Thomas wants to help Alice but she wants to deal with the issues on her own. Then the war begins and in a time of fear and confusion, the two of them are separated. Kate is overwhelmed with the knowledge but now that she is on this journey, she must see it through and discover the ending. She travels from Corsica to Pairs and then New York before she comes face to face with Alice.

The ending is not what I expected but I think it suited the characters and the plot. It is a love story where the timing never really works out. But it does show that even if we lose something in our lives, something is always waiting to be found. We are transported to the past and back to the present and Lucy Foley does a wonderful job with the flow of the story. It was a happy ending, just not one that you would expect. Lucy has created a unique story that tugs at the heartstrings.
