Estranged from his father and reclusive by choice, Cyrus thinks he is happy as a pathologist and not having to deal with live people or animals. But then he is forced back to his hometown, his father's ailing practice and a parade of crazy pets and their owners.
The first few pages were a challenge for me as Cyrus struggles with the idea of having to put down his first patient. From then on, while he never reveals all, you can see how this one week in his former hometown with people and pets depending on him and his past and future under the microscope changes him. James Herriot he is not but Cyrus is very well written and as a middle-age-coming-of-age story its as delightful as a certain dog finds a certain pair of underpants.
