Get rich. Get laid. Get even.
Todd Kent is young, hot, and on his way to the top of Wall Street when the eccentric founder of Hook, the popular new dating app, handpicks him to lead its floating on the stock exchange. Given just two months to pull it off, Todd and his investment banking team-brainy Neha, party-boy Beau, and old college flame Tara Taylor-race to close the $14 billion deal of the decade. It's also the chance of a lifetime for Tara, who sees her opportunity to break through the glass ceiling and justify six years of sacrifices for her career. But nothing is what it seems in Silicon Valley, and when tragedy strikes there's no telling where the sparks will fly.

'Michelle Miller's debut novel reads like a salacious, ripped-from-the headlines tell-all of Manhattan's young, wealthy, and ber-successful...Get ready to settle in-you won't be able to put down this book.' Lauren Weisberger,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Devil Wears Prada
'The Underwritingis the best one night stand I've ever had. Witty, sexy and sharp-I'd definitely call the next day. An authentically-hip novel with razor sharp characters which make it (in banking terms) a STRONG BUY.' Turney Duff,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Buy Side
'Reading this book was such a thrill, I was as sleep deprived as Michelle Miller's Adderall-fueled characters but having way more fun. Like a digital age Edith Wharton, Miller brilliantly chronicles the clash of cultures between high finance and high tech with perfect intricacy and nuance. Hilarious, exhilarating, and so, so clever, I'd rateThe Underwritinga STRONG BUY!'Kevin Kwan, bestselling author ofCrazy Rich Asians

The front cover of “The Underwriting” labels this book as the next ‘Devil Wears Prada’. And I think that is underselling the book completely.

There’s little in common between the two books beyond their locale – New York. There’s no mentor to look up to type, there’s no behind the curtain revelations, as the characters in the book are sold on what they are aspiring to. They know what lies beneath the veneer of New York’s Wall Street, and they want in, no matter how high the cost.

The characters are immediately unlikeable. You meet Todd, the chauvinistic stud who kissed up to the right start up CEO at the right time, landing the deal of a lifetime – taking Hook (AKA Tinder IRL) public. The ‘sociopathic’ founder, Josh, wants a small team of three, and that’s it. Todd doesn’t get much say in who is on his team as the banks 70 year old centerpiece dictates the terms of the deal, and who he gets to work with. And it’s not the team he can brow beat into submission. Save Neha, the greasy socially inept (moreso than the rest of them) analyst, the others are running their own game, and Todd is not the macho man he wants to be.

What’s interesting is how their lives all intertwine. We are revisited by Todd’s lady of the hour, Amanda, who believes there is more to their relationship than Todd does – indeed remembering his name is a point above what he’s put them down for. Nick knows Tara and Todd from college, and All of them have something to do with the tragic death of Kelly, an intern who had just signed up to work for Todd’s company. They just don’t realize how deep they are in this until it’s too late.

A story that’s part financial IPO how to, part whodunit, and topped off with a lot of shallowness that sees you turning the pages in the hope that something horrible will happen to these self absorbed idiots, there’s plenty to enjoy about “The Underwriting”. Except for the end of the book, which isn’t my preference in books of this type, but I’ll leave that part up to you to decide.
