Jennifer Donnelly

Jennifer Donnelly is the author of thirteen novels and a picture book for children. She grew up in New York State and studied English Literature and European History at the University of Rochester. Jennifer's first novel, The Tea Rose, is an epic historical novel set in London and New York in the late 19th century.

Her second novel, A Gathering Light, set against the backdrop of an infamous murder in the Adirondacks of 1906, won the Carnegie Medal, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Borders Original Voices Award, and was named a Printz Honor book.

In 2014, Jennifer teamed up with Disney to launch the bestselling Waterfire saga, an epic series about six mermaids on a quest to rid the world of an ancient evil.

To be honest I did pick this book up a few times before I bit the bullet and actually got it. And I am so glad I did.

This book is delightfully in depth, descriptive and original in it's conception of a magical world beneath the waves that humans, mostly, are unaware of.

At the heart of it all is Serafina, a princess who feels she has a lot to prove and is betrothed to a prince who though handsome, seems less than devoted.

In a space of 24 hours tragedy hits and her world is turned upside down. In order to save her kingdom and those she loves most she must travel the depths to complete a prophecy long thought forgotten.

This story has the makings to be epic. The world Jennifer has created filled with magic, mermaids, witches and rogues is lovingly thought out, the characters colourful and relatable.

If you know someone who loves mermaids, get them this book, they will not be disappointed.

I cannot wait to read book 3 in the Waterfire Saga series : Rogue Wave.
