Synopsis

It’s debatable as to whether each selection on The Very Best Of: 100 R&B Classics is certifiably classic, of course, but it is obvious that the set isn’t limited to R&B. A fair amount of space on the five-disc set, in fact, is reserved for popular rap singles. The emphasis is on hits from 2005-2010, but the compilers reached back to the early ‘80s and incorporate several tracks from the ‘90s as well. The highlights include Keith Sweat's “I Want Her,” De La Soul's “Ring Ring Ring,” Cassie’s “Me & U,” Silk’s “Freak Me,” Amerie’s “1 Thing,” and Lupe Fiasco's “Kick Push.” The inclusion of K.P. & Envyi's “Swing My Way” -- an oft-neglected late-‘90s gem -- is a very nice touch. ~ Andy Kellman
