Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) was a British painter and writer, born in Switzerland. As a painter, he favored the supernatural and leaning everything on an ideal scale, believing a certain amount of hyperbole necessary in the higher branches of historical painting. The figures in his paintings are full of life and earnestness. Like Rubens he excelled in the art settings his figures in motion. The grotesque humor of his fairy scenes is in its way not less remarkable then the poetic power of his more ambitious works. Fuseli painted more than 200 pictures, but exhibited only a small number of them. His sketches or designs numbered about 800 and they are frequently superior to his paintings.
