A British migrant family, determined to prosper, created a newspaper to dazzle the forested suburbs east of Perth, Western Australia. Over 21 years it battled media giants to pioneer the state's suburban press. This memoir relates the odd events and zany characters met along the way, starting without capital in a derelect haunted hotel. It shows how any community is a trove of wonder.

I rate this the most entertaining account I have read of a battler succeeding despite horrendous odds. This memoir (1969 to 1990) describes the process of applying to Australia House for assisted passage and the daunting consequences that followed.

Charles Bryce had a job awaiting his arrival in Australia but it turned sour after two days. With his journalistic skill from Fleet Street and sheer determination, he built a thriving newspaper. The book is divided into chapters dealing with different aspects of the challenge.

What entertained me most are the revelations he gives behind world scoops involving Shakespeare and interviewing Russias murdered crown prince (reborn in Australia!). Lots of fun reading, too, in local politics, hiring staff and getting to grips with printing and distribution.

Any family considering migration from UK to Australia will find useful stuff here, as will anyone who enjoys well written and amusing autobiography.
