Gurrumul: His Life And Music
On a November afternoon in 2010, Gurrumul sat in a studio in Sydney to be photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone. The studio was 3000 kilometres from where he was born on Echo Island off the coast of East Arnhem Land. A bare three years had passed since the release of Gurrumul, his critically acclaimed debut solo album. Those years of critical acclaim, all the years before them, and the illness that threatened to end it all, combine in one of the most inspiring music stories of our generation. From concert halls to recording studios and into the Yolngu heartland, this is the story of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. It's the story of an astonishing musical gift that has left audiences all over the world spellbound. Part road trip, part biography, Robert Hillman's illustrated account of Gurrumul's life and artistry takes you behind the scenes and offers rare insights into the sources of his inspiration. In interviews with family and friends, Gurrumul emerges as a man of his people, shaped by the beliefs, rites and ceremonies of a richly engaging culture.

Me And Rory Macbeath
Adelaide, 1977. It is the year Elvis died but for twelve-year-old Jake Taylor that doesn t really mean much. His world revolves around school; Rose Avenue, the street where he and his mum, Harry, live; and the courthouse where Harry is a barrister. His best friend, Robbie Duncan, lives only a few houses away and for them the Christmas holidays are for cricket, tennis and swimming at the pool or the beach. But then Rory Macbeath moves into the red brick house at the end of the avenue and everything starts to change.Rory and his family have emigrated to Australia from Glasgow and he and Robbie hit it off instantly. Jake has his doubts. But after long days and nights of swimming, fishing and daring each other into trouble, Jake comes to know Rory has talents and courage beyond anyone he has ever known.Like Harry, Rory Macbeath stands up to bullies. Harry does it in the courtroom. Rory does it closer to home. After a fishing trip with Robbie s dad, Mr Duncan brings Rory and the boys back to his house for dinner. But Rory disappears and everyone on Rose Avenue is about to discover why.For Jake and Rory nothing will ever be the same.
Our Review
Its impossible not to be transported back to the long summer holidays of your childhood while reading Me & Rory Macbeath. Those times that seemed to go on forever, where its all swimming pools and hot roads, ice-creams and no shoes. Where your world revolves around your friends, school and your family. Set in Adelaide in the 1970s with a 12 year old boy called Jake at its centre, Me & Rory Macbeath is a fantastic vehicle straight back to those glorious summers. Although its also a stark reminder that not all can be as peachy as it looks from the outside.
With fantastic courtroom drama (the author Richard Beasley is a barrister in NSW) and characters that seem to have been pulled straight from your own life this is a story that everyone who has ever had to grow up will just love.
A beautiful narrative that describes the uncertainty, the excitement and plain terror of that time when you realise you are no longer a child Me & Rory Macbeath is the quintessential coming-of-age novel that will give similar books, such as Jasper Jones, a run for its money. An easy choice for our May Book of the month.
