The movie version of Life of Pi is directed by Ang Lee and includes quite a lot of computer graphics. It looks good in 3D and is well acted. Suraj Sharma and Irrfan Khan deserve a special mention as the young and adult Pi. Gerard Depardieu plays a small but significant role. Adil Hussain and Tabu are excellent as Pis parents. The screenplay is fairly true to the book, but there is a romance element that has obviously been added, Hollywood style, and is completely unnecessary. There is a scene in the ships dining room which, while not in the book, obviously serves as a device to give background for the alternative story by introducing the sailor who breaks his leg, and the cook. I was sorry the scene with the priest, the imam and the pandit was omitted. While the CGI and 3D effects were brilliant, I felt the storm/sinking ship scenes asked the viewer to suspend disbelief a little too much: how did Pi manage to get back to the lifeboat from so far away in the high seas? I was glad I had recently reread the book so I was completely familiar with it, and I feel the movie kept the overall spirit and feel of the book. Would I watch it again? Definitely! Would I recommend seeing it in 3D? Absolutely!
