Celebrates home-style Southern Italian food, based on traditional recipes and methods.

Mangia! Mangia!, Italian for Eat! Eat!, celebrates home-style Southern Italian food, based on traditional recipes and methods passed down through the generations. Authors Teresa Oates and Angela Villella are passionate in their quest to preserve the vibrant food culture of their parents' native Calabria, and to introduce new generations to the joys of simple, generous cooking with the freshest produce.

Join them as they record the sacred seasonal rituals of their childhood, from the production of a year's supply of passata using summer's tomatoes, through autumn's ceremonial preservation of vegetables and olives, to the 'making' of the pig in winter, when an entire pig is converted into a pantry full of salumi. Learn how to match pasta types to sauces, how to prepare traditional Italian favourites like minestrone and lasagne, and how to create mouth-watering sweet treats for special family celebrations.

Mangia! Mangia! embraces the one constant of their migrant families' journeys – their food – prepared with an innate wisdom and served with a generosity of spirit. As you cook and eat, you will be doing your part to save these unique traditions and recipes, born of a rich migrant food culture, from extinction.

Beautifully photographed, Mangia! Mangia! is not only a wonderful cooking reference, it is a heartwarming account of the sharing of wisdom, the creation of community and the preservation of rituals that keep us close to those we love.

As a young girl growing up I of course I have always spent time with my family doing all the traditional things in this book and I have always said that I must put it all down on paper for my kids, grandkids, nephews & nieces, as they all came to Nonna & Nonno's house and love the food they always prepared for them. But these girls have saved me the trouble so I have already bought 6 books already and still are doing it, every time someone gets engaged or married, birthday or Christmas. its the perfect thing to give them. and they all love it. It really tells the story and it will never loose its popularity in our family. Good Luck Girls you have done an amazing job with it. Love your concept.

I am so happy with this book that I had to purchase the second one once it came out. It takes me back to my childhood, though we are trying to keep up with the tradition it is great to have it around the place so our kids might want to follow our family and friends gatherings. As a child and born here in Australia, I thought I would not want to do all that work with the traditional home style cooking when you can go any where and purchase it allready made, my mind changed once I understood the meaning of genuine home cooking. I have purchased three books as presents and other friends have purchased themselves. Even an Asian friend is obsessed with it. Nonna tradition is the best, hope the young ones can keep it going. Well done to these girls for putting this type of book out there. Love it

I have this book and I've already given one copy away as a gift. I'm about to order a lot more for this year's christmas gifts. It is a highlight of the 4 full meters of cook books I have on my shelf.

This book is packed with very authentic home style recipes and advice - not the normal carbonara, lasagna, scollopini book that looks like every other mainstream Italian book. This one has the type of food my Italian grandfather used to cook, and it covers subjects like Salami, sausage and pasta making with practical advice and clear instructions. In my family these skills were lost when my grandfather died and I'm determined to re-learn these skills.

I cooked the Quail pasta last night and it was to die for! The zucchini fritters are extremly moist and light. The lasagna is very good, although I must admit I did my grandfather's trick of adding 2-3 finely chopped silverbeet leaves to the sauce to bring the flavours together. I can't wait for the preserving season to start because the pickle and preserve recipes look brilliant, especially those anchovie stuffed dried tomatoes.

I'd recommend this book to anyone that wants something a bit different, very authentic and not stuffed with 'padding'.
